Public Health and Healthcare Systems
The role of public health departments has traditionally been to develop, create and enhance conditions to improve and support the health of all people of all communities by promoting conditions in communities that support healthier lifestyles, detecting and responding to outbreaks of diseases, protecting community members from vaccine preventable diseases and helping to provide essential public health services. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the increasing need for health care system and public health transformation and requires public health officials, payers, providers, insurers, and patients to work together to improve community and population health. This track will examine the links between innovation and quality improvement in health systems and public health and explore emerging methods of capturing data and transforming it into information usable in advancing public health and delivering population health. Topics include:
  • Strategies to promote health equity and challenging social determinants of health for various populations (e.g., age, race, LGBTQI)
  • Identifying quality and evidence-based approaches to population health
  • Implementing evidence-based programs in public health, clinical practice, and community settings
  • Innovative efforts to transform public health departments
  • Working with governmental bodies to effect legislative and regulatory changes
  • Effecting change within governmental bodies as a staff member of advisor
  • Writing position pieces to advocate for prevention and population health
  • Support for public health efforts, at community, local, state, and federal level
  • Discussing the role of “big data” to transform care, including innovative change management and technical applications that support and drive policy goals while reducing provider burden


Preventive Medicine Workforce and Opportunities
This track will assess the future of our profession/specialty including hopes surrounding emerging opportunities in Preventive Medicine, emerging trends and changes, and unmet needs and challenges. As such, this track will include sessions on career development and advancement, and examine the various opportunities provided by our profession. Topics include:
  • Discussing updates from ABPM, ACGME and AAMC
  • Preparing early and mid-career physicians for leadership in the field of preventive medicine
  • Supporting senior level physicians and encouraging their contribution and role in growing the field
  • Building and strengthening the preventive medicine pipeline
  • Innovative strategies for preventive medicine training to position it for the future
  • Role of preventive medicine in supporting public health workforce development
  • Skills-building workshops (e.g., negotiation skills, social media writing, developing poster presentations, communications and advocacy skills)
  • Exploring aspects of various preventive medicine careers including military medicine
  • Military preventive medicine opportunities and endeavors


Research, Evidence and Translation
This track will present research and address the links among research and new evidence driving policy and public health practice, practice changes informed by policy, and awareness/avoidance of policies’ unintended consequences. Governmental public health agencies, academic institutions, health delivery systems, employers and others are among those promoting healthy populations through research, data analysis, survey generation, the application of epidemiological and biostatistical principles, and the evaluation of evidence that drives health policy for health promotion, health protection and disease prevention. Topics may cover a wide range of preventive medicine issues including, but not limited to:
  • Strategies to promote health equity, including those that address the social determinants of health and the environmental determinants of health for various populations (e.g., age, race, LGBTQI)
  • Advanced methods to study the social determinants of health (e.g., mixed methods research, complex policy analyses, or multi-level modeling studies)
  • Understanding the uses of implementation science
  • Applying research-based and practice-based evidence to clinical practice or public policy
  • Strategizing messaging techniques for new research dissemination
  • Reviewing how Healthy People 2030 and related initiatives are “moving the needle” and improving outcomes
  • Using large data sets such as NHANES, BRFSS, chronic disease surveys, vital statistics, demography rates, and other metrics for disease prevention, control and surveillance
  • Applications and implications of evidence synthesis and translation methods for prevention practice or policy
  • Writing scholarly manuscripts for scientific publication
  • Funding for prevention and public health research
  • Applying genomics, precision medicine and precision public health to advance prevention


Clinical and Lifestyle Medicine
Clinical preventive medicine is increasingly important as we move from fee-for-service to value-based care. This track will cover clinical preventive medicine in various settings including preventive medicine clinics, lifestyle medicine practices and occupational wellness clinics. This track will examine the emerging science and delivery of clinical preventive medicine and lifestyle medicine and how they have been used as a catalyst for health system transformation. Some suggested topics include:
  • Sessions addressing the general public, preventive medicine professionals, and health systems
  • Implementing residency program curriculum
  • Incorporating lifestyle medicine core concepts into clinical practice
  • Developing clinical preventive medicine skills
  • Advocating for legislation that supports clinical and lifestyle medicine
  • Utilizing social marketing techniques to promote prevention
  • Discussing USPSTF and CPSTF updates and implementation
  • Strengthening business models for viable preventive medicine and lifestyle medicine practices
  • Investigating novel technologies to deliver clinical preventive services
  • Identifying gaps in knowledge
  • Providing services in remote environments
  • Examining the impact of COVID-19 on clinical and lifestyle medicine
